Sprint, jump, push, and pull – and then will the world to hold its breath for just a moment. The world’s best pole vaulter acrobatically cross the bar at a height of up to five meters. The spectacular show presenting this fascinating discipline of the sport of athletics will return to the majestic Wannerhalle of Zurich Main Station this Wednesday, 30 August (after two Weltklasse Zürich city events on Sechseläutenplatz), allowing visitors and passers-by to watch from up close.
The competition has the potential to be a nerve-wrecking experience, similar to the recent world championship final. In Budapest, there were two winners in the end, a first in women’s pole vault. Nina Kennedy (AUS) and Katie Moon (USA) decided against a jump-off after clearing 4.90. Instead they shared the gold medal. Now, the two new champions clash with their opponents again. One of the athletes who might want to settle the score is Wilma Murto (FIN), the world championship bronze medallist and European champion. Another one is Sandi Morris, who many Weltklasse Zürich fans also know as the singer of “Souvenir”, the Weltklasse Zürich song.
Competing in front of her home crowd with joy and confidence
Angelica Moser will no doubt get a particularly warm welcome. The local hero and member of the Zurich athletics club LCZ, had treated her fans to one of the best competitions of her career so far, clearing 4.75 in a new personal outdoor best and placing fifth in the final. “I have rediscovered jumping with joy,” the 25-year-old athlete said. According to her, this newly found lightness and her confidence helped her jump at the highest level. “Competing at Weltklasse Zürich at Zurich Main Station will be very special, because I get to have so many friends close by.”
Zurich Main Station will be a Weltklasse Zürich event venue throughout the afternoon and evening on Wednesday. While the competition begins at 5pm, sponsor booths will be open to visitors starting at noon.
