Two new meeting records were set – one by Olympic champion Christian Taylor (USA; 17.80m) in the triple jump and another one by 3000m SC world record holder Ruth Jebet (Bahrain) in 9:07.00. And New Zealand’s shot putter Tom Walsh treated himself and the audience to a new Oceanian record (22.20m).
Vowing the crowd: Kariem Hussein and Selina Büchel
Switzerland’s local heroes helped electrify the trademark atmosphere at Letzigrund Stadium. Both 400m hurdler Kariem Hussein and 800m runner Selina Büchel vowed their home crowd at the sold-out arena (25,000 spectators) with courageous races, even though their efforts did not quite pay off in the end.
The same could be said for Evan Jager who won the hearts of the audience by leading the 5000m field – by as much as almost 100 metres at times – only to be caught in the last metres of the race. His bravery was celebrated by a delighted Zurich audience.
Weltklasse Zürich was an IAAF Diamond League final event. 16 Diamond Trophies were awarded to the most successful athletes of the season.
