In the shape of the “magic track”, the trophy incorporates the dynamics of athletics and the optics of the track on and in the midst of which the various events of the sport are pursued. World-renowned Zurich designer Alfredo Häberli created the new silver design, drawing on the original Zurich trophy that had been used as challenge cup for relay races.
“We are proud to have been able to engage Alfredo Häberli, who is an internationally established designer. Like Weltklasse Zürich, he values the notion of being open-minded and globally connected and locally rooted at the same time. The Zürich Trophy award encapsulates the honour and outstanding achievement of winning an event at Weltklasse Zürich,” Co-Meeting Director Christoph Joho said.
“To me, as a designer, trophies of historical elegance, are strange. A new cup should mirror the uniqueness of the arena, the meeting, and the city, I think,” Alfredo Häberli, who designed the Zurich Trophy at his local studio, explained his approach. “The trophy is both unique in its shape and message, and it is functional.”
The very first Zürich Trophy will be awarded on Wednesday, 30 August 2023, and the first recipient will be the winner of the women’s pole vault competition at Zurich Main Station. On 31 August, the cup will take centre stage during the closing show at Letzigrund Stadium: 14 winners will receive the precious award and will no doubt be raising it, triumphantly, into the Zurich night sky.
The Zürich Trophy will be awarded to winners at Weltklasse Zürich in 2023, 2024, and 2026. In 2025 and 2027, athletes will receive the Wanda Diamond League Trophy that is traditionally awarded at the finals of the most prestigious international meeting series.
