Stars of the Wanda Diamond League Final include the likes of Armand Duplantis, Noah Lyles, Mujinga Kambundji and Simon Ehammer
The international elite of athletics will gather at Weltklasse Zürich to compete in the Wanda Diamond League Final on 8 September 2022. All Swiss medallists of the recent European championships in Munich and many international champions, including Olympic, world and European title holders have confirmed their appearance. Letzigrund Stadium is sold out for the long-standing athletics meeting: 25 000 visitors will again help create a stunning backdrop for international and local stars of the sport.
“We don’t take being able to host Weltklasse Zürich at a sold-out Letzigrund Stadium year after year as a given,” says Co-Meeting Director Christoph Joho. “And we are truly excited about the upcoming season highlight of the Wanda Diamond League and about celebrating a fantastic night of athletics!”
“After a season sprinkled with so many highlights, particularly from a Swiss perspective, Weltklasse Zürich visitors can expect some fascinating competitions and spectacular performances,” Co-Meeting Director Andreas Hediger adds. “There will be plenty of athletics action with many Olympic, world and European champions at Letzigrund Stadium. We are confirming some of their names already today, others will follow. And we will announce the last entries at the end of this week – after the final qualifying meeting in Brussels.”
There is no doubt, even today, that the who’s who in athletics will compete at Weltklasse Zürich once again. The illustrious list so far includes three world record holders, for instance: Armand “Mondo” Duplantis in the men’s pole vault, high hurdler Tobi Amusan, and triple jump queen Yulimar Rojas.
Olympic and/or world championship title holders reaching for the Diamond Trophy this year include sprinter Noah Lyles, high hurdlers Grant Holloway and Hansle Parchment, long jumpers Malaika Mihambo and Miltiadis Tentoglu, as well as India’s javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra.
The entry lists also already boasts newly crowned double European champion and current Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Femke Bol, who claimed as many as three titles in Munich. She will be competing in her favourite event, the 400m hurdles.
The Swiss stars will be drawing particular attention in the men’s long jump, where Simon Ehammer is ready to score a coup and in both women’s sprint events: There will duels between 200m world champion Shericka Jackson and Switzerland’s 200m European champion Mujinga Kambundji both in the 100m and 200m.
Kambundji and Ehammer will be joined by as many as eight fellow Swiss athletes, including the three European championship medallists Ricky Petrucciani, Annik Kälin (long jump), and Ditaji Kambundji, as well as Dominik Alberto, Julien Bonvin, Lore Hoffmann, Jason Joseph and Chiara Scherrer.
