An exciting sports year is drawing to an end. But the many highlights of a new one already appear on the horizon. The European championships in Rome, the Olympic Games in Paris, and the most prestigious athletics series are all set to keep sports fans under the athletics spell in 2024. On the occasion of the World Athletics Council Meeting in Monaco, the disciplines for the 2024 Wanda Diamond League series were assigned, and some strategic decisions were taken. The date – 5 September 2024 – for the next athletics showdown with national and international stars in Zurich had already been determined earlier.
A festival for hurdlers and the Swiss stars’ favoured disciplines
Deciding on the programme of events was the second step in preparing for the 2024 athletics outdoor season. Once again, Weltklasse Zürich fans will enjoy an exciting mix of technical and track events. And Swiss stars, including Mujinga and Ditaji Kambundji, Jason Joseph, Simon Ehammer, Angelica Moser, Lore Hoffmann, and Audrey Werro, will be delighted to hear that they get to shine again in their respective disciplines in front of their home crowd. In addition, all four sprint hurdle events (100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, and both the men’s and women’s 400m h races) will be Wanda Diamond League events.
"We are looking forward to our very interesting programme of events; there will be many fascinating competitions. The 14 Wanda Diamond League events will again bring our sport’s superstars to Zurich, and at the same time, we will be able present the best Swiss athletes," Co-Meeting Director Andreas Hediger confirms.
These Wanda Diamond League disciplines will feature in the Weltklasse Zürich 2024 programme of events:
100m women, 200m men, 800m women, 1500m men, 5000m women, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m women and men, high jump women, pole vault women, long jump men, shot put men, and javelin throw men.
In addition, Weltklasse Zürich will stage a men’s pole vault competition, and a women’s 4x100m relay race.
Strategic decision: Wanda Diamond League Final to be held in Zurich again in 2028 and 2029
The two Weltklasse Zürich Co-Meeting Directors Andreas Hediger and Christoph Joho, brought back even more great news from Monaco: The Wanda Diamond League Final will be held in Zurich again both in 2028 and 2029. This means that the lakeside city will host four final events of the prestigious international meeting series over the course of the next six years (2025, 2027, 2028, and 2029).
"Weltklasse Zürich and the Wanda Diamond League Final go very well together," said Christoph Joho. "We are honoured by the trust the Wanda Diamond League and the other meeting directors place in us by the strategic decision to award us with two additional editions of the Final. 2028, in particular, will be very special, as we will be celebrating our centenary."
